The Black Widow

Black WidowReal Name: Natasha Romanov

As the enigmatic BLACK WIDOW, super-spy Natasha Romanov is free to pursue her own secretive goals. Though she is a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent with matchless tactical expertise and combat training, the Widow's mysterious motives have often made her a rogue element in her dealings with the AVENGERS.

She and Hawkeye fight the Hulk; she stuns the Hulk after he saves the ship that the S.H.I.E.L.D. Agents that came with them are on. She is later revealed to be a double agent for HYDRA in a plot to obtain the DNA sample of the Hulk and frames Hawkeye for the theft. After the S.H.I.E.L.D Agents leave, Black Widow calls up a member of HYDRA stating that Hawkeye has been disposed of and that they will need a new location for HYDRA to receive the DNA sample.

The Black Widow is subsequently shown to have moved up to the inner circle of Hydra. However, she does betray Strucker to save Hawkeye from being drained by the Satan's Claw when the Avengers battle HYDRA on HYDRA Island; she later made up a cover story, but Von Strucker seemed suspicious of her again.

When A.I.M. refuses to turn over the Cosmic Cube to Hydra, Baron Von Strucker plans an all-out attack on A.I.M., and when it begins the Black Widow approaches the Avengers for help.  She has been infiltrating Hydra under the personal orders of Nick Fury, who has disappeared, and without Fury the Black Widow has no way of proving she's not a traitor.  The Avengers help her take down both A.I.M. and Hydra, and at the end Hawkeye helps her escape being taken into SHIELD custody so she can find Fury and prove her innocence.
