Across Manhatten, Avengers Com-Links crackle with an urgent message:
"Avengers, this is Sgt. Watson. We've got a hostage situation at the United Nations - please rendezvous there with all deliberate speed, and meet with the Commander Busiek of G.U.A.R.D., who has command in the field."
With or without the help of the N.Y.P.D., the Avengers assembled at the perimeter set up by G.U.A.R.D. and the N.Y.P.D. The command bunker was located in a coffee shop across the street that Commander Busiek had set up, and he gave them a situation update.
"It appears that the bank robberies were diversions, intended to tie up NYPD resources and decoy you guys until they could move into place" began Busiek. "Some crackpot named Liberty, along with his gunmen, has taken control of the building. Apparently they used some kind of gas to incapacitate the guards and delegates, and timed it so that they did so during a vote, so that they were able to capture most of the Ambassadors."
Busiek spread a map of the U.N. building on a table. "They have secured the main room, and barracaded themselves insid," he continued. "Liberty seems to be holding them for ransom, and an opportunity to air some gripes - he calls this a strike at the illegal government of the Uniited States, saying that the federal government is illegal, and that the tree of liberty has to be refreshed, or some garbage. Bottom line - he wants ten million dollars, safe transport for him and his men, and immunity from prosecution." Busiek shakes his head sadly. "What a crackpot - he might get the money, but the rest?".
"The State Department has been in conference with the members of the Security Council, and they have unanimously voted that one hour before the deadline, G.U.A.R.D. forces are to begin an assault, taking whatever care we can to preserve the lives of the ambassadors and delegates - but to end the threat. They pretty much are agreed that they can't afford to set the precedent that they will make any deals with terrorists."
"While I make preparations for that, I have also been instructed to support you with anything you need to attempt... well, whatever you think will do any good - if we reach our deadline, the odds are pretty good that this will turn into a bloodbath."
"What do you want to do, here?"
Editorial Note - This is the point where the campaign ended, due to an operational stalemate - they requested more information, they were told that this is all the information that was availble to them, and no further actions from the players were forthcoming. Real Life intruded, and the group lost interest in continuing. The following ending is made up of whole cloth, and is much less entertaining than the real actions of the players would have been.
The newspaper accounts of what happened next were kind of hazy, but contained the following points:
The remaining terrorists, demoralized at what they had heard from their leader, surrendered. G.U.A.R.D. Agents secured the building, and the delegates were rescued. Zemo took a leave of absence, taking the remnants of his armor and the burned-out remains of the prototype dimensional gateway with him, vowing to find a way to track and recover Thor and the Black Knight.
The other Avengers returned to the mansion, saddened by their loss.
And the fact that someone would have to take care of Thor's goats until his return.
