Personal History:

Luke Cage joined the Army in late 1940's, and given his talent for languages was routed to Army Intelligence via Paratrooper school.  He was forwarded to the OSI, which became the CIA, and in the 1950's was based in and around Paris. He became the Paris bureau chief in 1960, and in 1963 was the victim of a GRU assassination attempt, which left him crippled and wheelchair-bound.

While riding a desk back in Washington, he was approached by operatives of the Army Special Projects division, the same people who had helped create the Shield back in the 1940's.  Their approach was to create a modern Shield, but using biochemical rather than mechanical enhancements, combining various technologies and a cannister of alien DNA they'd scrounged from a crashed Skrull spacecraft -- and they asked Cage to volunteer to be the test subject.  After several long operations and a submersion in a polyglyceride RNA bath, the doctors came to the conclusion that their procedures were a failure. 

Depressed, Cage returned to work in the civilian world, acting as a security consultant to several financial institutions in New York City.  During a robbery, Cage was bit by the villain known as the Viper, whose strange venom somehow reacted with the treatments he had undergone, and acted to re-vitalize him.  Returned to the physical age of a young man in his prime, Cage found that his skin and muscles had become as strong as steel.  After defeating Viper, Cage returned to active service as a Special Agent, working for a new secret agency created by the President to swiftly deploy and deal with supra-normal "Marvel" level threats -- the General United Action/Reaction Department (G.U.A.R.D.).

Agent Cage is the first of the special operatives of G.U.A.R.D., and works out of the NYC offices - for some reason, NYC seems to be a magnet for both the Good and Evil Marvels.
