Writer: Barbara KeselSummary: This issue introduces Suzy Sherman, a teenage resident of the Los Angeles area. She is attacked by a Sentinel robot (which had just reactivated following the events of Onslaught), who informs us all that she seems to be a mutant, but of the Kree variety. During the fight with the Sentinel she discovers that she has some measure of invunerability, super-strength, and the ability to fly.
Wasting little time, she knocks the Sentinel robot off into the sky, turns around - and faster than flashbulbs can pop, she finds that she has achieved instant stardom. Fortunately, her father is Toby Sherman, a Hollywood agent...
She flies off home. She has a metric ton of telephone messages from all the people who recognized her - some agents, some wanting to sign her for licensing representation, and some who want to date her. But she has more important things to do - Costume Party!
Suzy calls up her best friends - Gretchen, Melody, Amber Watkins, and Chiyomi - and they proceed to make her a costume, while Amber tries to drag her off for a private conversation.
Her ex-boyfriend Seth comes calling after she's safely in her costume, and scolds her for becoming part of the Publicity Machine. Suzy becomes enraged, and seeks out the broken Sentinel. Redering him harmless, she interrogates him, confirming that she is a Kree mutant.
Meanwhile...a strange plot is coming close to exposure, and a strange pyro is approaching Los Angeles.
Writer: Barbara KeselSummary: Ultragirl is helping fire-fighters with the mystery blaze ignited at the end of last issue. She uses a watertank truck to help free some trapped firemen, and is ambushed by the firebug who ignited the blaze (called Effex). She carries him to the authorities, but is horrified to learn that its merely a robot - and that the fire has burned her hair and uniform mostly way.
Not to mention a large portion of skin. But by the time she flies for help to her ex-boyfriend Seth, her skin and hair has pretty much regenerated itself. But not her costume. She borrows Seth's t-shirt.
Meanwhile, the New Warriors have arrived to help combat the blaze. Namorita finds and destroys a machine which was using water to menace the beach. Suzy shows up, and meets the New Warriors, who give her an impromptu test of her powers. Gretchen delivers a new costume, and Suzy turns down a date with Rage. Meanwhile, Nova has been ambushed by Effex, and the New Warriors plus Ultragirl head over.
Amber is meeting with her parents and some of their friends - or should we say co-consipirators. They are a group of Kree which watch and protect Suzy, who is supposed to be the prophesized one who will lead the Kree from bondage from both the Shi'ar and the Blue Kree. Amber (whose Kree name is "Ahmbra") is assigned the task of warning Suzy to keep her head down and maintain a low profile.
Meanwhile, Effex's ambush of the New Warriors and Ultragirl has worked - they can't tell which of his threats are real, and which ones are fake. At the end, Effex picks up Justice and Namorita, and walks deeper into the blaze.
Writer: Barbara KeselSummary: Ultragirl, carrying Rage, are pursuing the villain Effex deeper into the forest fire he caused, attempting to recover Effex's two hostages, an unconscious Justice and Namorita. In a varient of the famed Fastball Special, Ultragirl hurls Rage forward like a missle, and they both impact the Effex battlesuit.
They rescue the hostages, and Rage and Ultragirl head back into the fire - and to Suzy's suprise, neither her nor her costume ignite in the flames this time. She destroys the battlesuit - but Effex has already abandoned it.
Ultragirl and the New Warriors scout about for Effex, and tangle with a decoy before Amber summons Ultragirl to meet her little Kree group. They explain that she's the Ultimate Unifer, chosen by prophecy to lead the Kree to their "Golden Age", and that until that time she needs to keep a low profile. She rejects them, and flies off to fight Effex with the New Warriors.
During the final fight she develops "Ultravision", the ability to tell normals from mutants - and she can see through all of Effex' decoys. Effex blows himself up rather than be captured - all he wanted is fame, and he thinks that dying in combat here is the best way to do it.
The story ends with Suzy trying to come to terms with what she is - and using the head of her Sentinel as a storyteller, to find out all about (or at least, all the Sentinels know) about her Kree heritage.
