Dan Jurgens Interview

Dan Jurgens is a busy fellow these days, writing Captain America and Thor for Marvel and Aquaman. He has graciously agreed to answer a couple of quick questions for the Star-Spangled Site!

Last issue was somewhat of a closure, in which many of the sub-plots were brought to a finish. We know that the next main storyline is the AIM/Protocide arc - what happens after that, generally speaking? Any name-dropping you want to do *grin*

When I write, I tend to build a major storyline that will take several issues to play out, then bounce to a few two or single issue stories. After the Cap/Protocide arc, I expect to do exactly that with a few single issue stories, one of which will be a Captain America/Thor crossover. After all that we'll swing into a major storyline that will have World War II as well as present elements to it.

According to our polls and message boards, there is still a great interest in knowing what happened to the supporting cast of the Mark Gruenwald run after Onslaught; coincidentally, Onslaught happened right after the Fighting Chance storyline, in which Cap makes specific provisions for his hotline and supporting cast to continue his work after his death. Are there any plans to follow up with any of them (Zack Moonstone, Free Spirit, Bernie Rosenthal, Jack Flagg, Diamondback)?>>

Not really. It's important to realize that, real time, those stories appeared quite awhile ago. To be fair to new readers I want to concentrate on new material and characters.

You've said in several places that you would like to do a Thor/Captain America crossover; any news on that front?

It's a natural and we have it pencilled in. More than that...you'll have to wait and see!

I've been told that Andy Kubert is leaving - any idea who will be the regular artist? Are you taking over the artistic reigns yourself?

Yes, indeed. Jerry Ordway does a fabulous job on the next issue, #32, then I take over with Cap #33. Art Thibert, who inked me on Adventures of Superman and Superman/Fantastic Four, will be inking the book.

There is a lot of WWII-era references being made over in Thunderbolts - a new Scourge who may (or may not) be Jack Munroe/Nomad, the V-Battalion is made up of allies and at least one enemy of Cap's from the Invaders days, not to mention Fred Davis, who took over the role of Bucky after the original's death. Any of this likely to spill over into Captain America?

No. Frankly, I think a couple of those things are best forgotten anyway, and should be the province of the Captain America writer and editor to decide.

Captain America has taken a leave of absence from the Avengers - while I know that you don't write the Avengers per se, how long do you think Cap will remain absent?

Not long, I hope. To me, Cap never quits, never walks out on anything, no matter what the problem. He belongs in the Avengers and would never have walked out, regardless of the circumstances. To think his presence is hurting the team is more or less unthinkable, and he'd find another way to deal with it.
