Commentary"Tara is by far the hottest girl I have ever seen!" Yes she is, Mr. Skull, yes she is. Jacobsen and company embark on the epic conclusion of the all-too-short New Invaders series. This issue is full of action and revelations with too many highlights to list. Even the few pages of "down time" are filled with important progressions. To recap: Meranno, a crazed Atlantean superhuman has taken his renegade troops and has set up a doomsday device; melt the polar icecaps and turn the world to extensive ocean, which is an old trick in comics, but it works well, simply given that Meranno is Atlantean and hates Namor, specifically Namor's affections towards humankind. A larger than life fight ensues, with forces marshalled against each other, Captain America and the New Invaders versus Meranno and his rogue Atlantean legions. As Meranno's plans come to fruition, Thin Man steps in to save the day, while the Human Torch, the original, "best and brightest", Jim Hammond proves himself a great hero. This is a great send-off issue, top notch writing from Jacobsen and the top quality art from Smith, that is if you're a fan of his style. Despite this being an end to the current series, Jacobsen sets it up in such a way that the Invaders could easily come back and guest star in another book next month, or even resurface next year in another title. The ranks are shuffled a bit, but it all makes sense, and Jacobsen leaves us with a particularly harrowing scene for Thin Man, but it fits the old codger and I hope to see more of Dr. Dickson in the future. I don't want to give too much away, it's one of those titles you really need to read yourself, especially since it's the end and it's so darn good. This comic does such a great job giving us not just great scenes, but affective moods as well, it's dire when the stakes are high, somber when things have hit rock bottom, and eerie during the weirder scenes. A great read. There's so much I want to talk about and mention and analyze, but it would give away too much, too many great little details and parts and scenes. Read it yourself. I give this issue an A. |
