Quick Summary--"Made Perfect"

The Commission on Superhuman Activities has sent the New Thunderbolts to teach the New Avengers a lesson! This issue opens with a continuation of the sprawling Avengers/Thunderbolts battle from last issue. Meanwhile, back at Avengers Tower, Joystick is getting pummelled by Spider-Woman. During this fight we learn that Joystick is using this opportunity to release tiny "surveillance microbes" into the Avengers' HQ. Across town in Brooklyn, Abe Jenkins and Norbert Ebersol (the Fixer) recruit Donnie Gill (Blizzard--recently fired from the Thunderbolts) for a new team that will "save the world."

After a long battle, the Thunderbolts triumph over the Avengers. Surprisingly, Atlas seems to be the team member who feels the worst about it, saying he thought the victory would feel better. Songbird tells the beaten Avengers, "We can do it again... anytime we're ordered to... or any time we want to...."

Back at the CSA, we learn that the Avengers aren't the only team being spied on. Hank Pym says he has visited the Baxter Building (home of the Fantastic Four), while Dallas Riordan has visited the Thunderbolts. Screens in the background demonstrate that the CSA now has the ability to spy on all three teams at will. Finally, another big surprise, the CSA is being guided in this operation by Baron Helmut Zemo! Zemo claims that his intentions are to "save the world" (surely an intentional parallel of the wording used by the Fixer when recruiting Blizzard).

Commentary

  • This was a good issue, but I was a little disappointed by it. Lots of fighting, not many answers. I guess I was hoping that we'd learn more about the CSA's larger plans. How exactly is Zemo planning to save the world, anyway? Is he sincere?
  • If I recall correctly, Nugent Technologies (builders of the surveillance microbes) is the company that Hank Pym was working for in Avengers Vol. 3, around issues #13-18. (Didn't it turn out that the company was owned by Ultron?)
  • The Spider-Woman/Joystick fight was particularly interesting and showed a new aspect of Joystick's personality.
  • Only five more issues until #100!

Issue #15 will apparently feature the Squadron Sinister! Sounds like fun (especially considering that Speed Demon was a member of the SS back when he was known as the Whizzer)! Also, it seems safe to assume we'll find out more about the Dr. Spectrum we saw in #13.
